USPS to close down sole post office in Paradise Valley

PHOENIX — The United States Postal Service plans to shut down Paradise Valley’s sole post office.

The notice from USPS came from a letter in early June, according to Paradise Valley Mayor Mark Stanton.

“We began reaching out to local and regional postal officials and have begun dialogues with them to see why the postal service would want to do this and how we can appeal it,” Stanton told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

The letter says the building will be shuttered at the end of September.

Stanton said regional USPS contacts were not aware of the order to close the post office.

“There’s no cost savings to the postal service,” he added.

Its two employees are on the town’s payroll. Furthermore, Paradise Valley does not charge USPS rent for the area — and the equipment used within it is leased from USPS.

“It’s all sustained by the town itself and (it’s) really the only postal facility that’s available to the town of Paradise Valley,” Stanton said.

Another reason why town leaders like Stanton are fighting for the office to stay is because of its role as one of the community’s sole public gathering spaces.

“It’s part of our town,” Stanton said. “It’s part of our culture, and we think it’s an important thing to fight for.”

KTAR News has reached out to USPS for a statement on why the closure has been ordered but has not received a response yet.
