Search underway for 83-year-old man who went missing while hiking Grand Canyon’s North Rim

Officials are searching for an 83-year-old Utah man who went missing while hiking with a friend near the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

The search for Gerald Guinn began around 5 p.m. Tuesday after his hiking companion reported that the two had become separated, according to the National Park Service.

Guinn was last seen in a remote area near the park’s northeastern boundary along Forest Service Road 610, also known as Dog Saddle. Officials said he was not carrying hiking gear or camping equipment when he disappeared.

Guinn is described as a white man who is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a tan long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and a ball cap.

Grand Canyon National Park, Coconino County Search and Rescue and Kane County Search and Rescue are participating in the search. Crews focused their efforts on ground and aerial searches Wednesday, using drones and helicopters.
