Unidentified human remains found in Phoenix suburb

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office reported that human remains were found in the northwest Valley on Tuesday nigh in a river wash.

Detective Doug Matteson with the sheriff’s office said the remains were found near El Mirage and Bell roads in Surprise, Arizona.

Authorities said hikers told them there appeared to be bones in a wash in the Agua Fria River.

Identification, as well as gender of the skeleton, were pending but sheriff’s office spokeswoman Courtney Palma said the remains belonged to an adult and initial indications didn’t involve foul play.

Palma also said the victim hadn’t died at the scene.
