Flash flood warning issued in Maricopa County amid monsoon storms

PHOENIX — A flash flood warning was issued for Maricopa County on Sunday until 8:35 p.m. due to expected rain and wind in the area.
According to the National Weather Service Phoenix, the storm is not expected to carry over into Monday but could create hazards to end the weekend.
Widespread gusty winds are expected this afternoon across southern AZ, with the latest SPC outlook showing a 5% chance of severe wind (~60 mph). Wind, dust, and lightning will be the biggest threats, but locally heavy rainfall may also lead to some flooding. #azwx pic.twitter.com/DttocNyXmb

Radar showed a handful of storm cells developing in the west Valley near Glendale and further south of Avondale.
Pockets of rain were seen at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as well.
Phoenix received its first storm of the monsoon season on Thursday with the city experiencing .39 inches of rain.
Monsoon season officially began on June 15.
It was a rainy monsoon season last year in the Valley, as Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport received 4.20 inches. The average rainfall in Phoenix during the monsoon season is 2.43 inches.
The season ended at the end of September with 23 days of rain, which was the second-most rainy days in history.
That was after back-to-back underwhelming years where only 1 inch of rain was recorded during the monsoon season of 2020 and .66 inches the previous year.
