2 dead, 2 hospitalized after multi-vehicle crash in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Two people died in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, 37-year-old Pedro Lopez Cardona was driving an SUV at a high speed before he was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. He died from his injuries at the scene.

The collision occurred around 2:10 p.m. near 35th Avenue and Union Hills Drive.

Police said Cardona ran a red light and collided with a four-door passenger car that was making a left-hand turn to go north on 35th Avenue.

A passenger in that car, 63-year-old Boniface Black, who was seated in the front, was also pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Two other individuals involved in the crash were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. One of them was the driver of the car in which Black was a passenger.

Police said this is still an active investigation as police were still processing evidence as of 2 p.m. Thursday.
