PHOENIX – Five people went to the hospital after a Mesa municipal pool was evacuated due to a hazmat incident on Thursday morning, authorities said.

Staff at the Brimhall Aquatic Complex called 911 after a chemical reaction caused off-gassing, according to the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

Fire crews from Mesa and Gilbert responded to the scene near Southern Avenue and Higley Road.

“When crews arrived it was immediately upgraded to a hazardous materials first alarm to add additional units for mitigation and patient care needs,” Marrisa Ramírez-Ramos, a public information officer for Mesa Fire, said in an email.

Were there injuries from Mesa pool hazmat incident?

Responders took four patients to the hospital, and a fifth person went to a hospital for follow-up in a private vehicle.

“All patients were stable with minor complaints,” Ramírez-Ramos said.

Crews were expected to remain on the scene for several hours.

The Brimhall Aquatic Complex was closed until further notice, with camp activities moved to Mesa’s Jefferson Recreation Center.

Any lasting effects from the hazmat incident?

The pool at Brimhall Aquatic Center will remain closed on Friday as crews continue to clean up the mess, city officials said.

The rest of the Brimhall campus will reopen as Mesa Parks & Rec camp activities resume at the school.

A dine-in movie night previously scheduled for Friday night has been postponed to the following Friday on June 14.
