An investigator with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office has been indicted on a negligent homicide charge in the February shooting death of a Mesa mother of seven.
A Maricopa County grand jury indicted Dulance Morin on Sept. 10, according to court records. The felony count accuses him of causing the death of 32-year-old Maria Lewis through criminal negligence. Since the case involved a gun, Morin faces a longer prison sentence if convicted.
Morin, 47, remains employed in an administrative role, the Attorney General’s Office said Monday in a statement reported by ABC15. The office said he will keep that position unless he is convicted. Attorney General Kris Mayes believes he will be found not guilty.
Lewis was reportedly shot Feb. 28 while on an early-morning walk near Ellsworth and Ray roads in Mesa. She died at the scene. She and Morin were neighbors.
Mesa police submitted a negligent homicide charge to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in March after serving search warrants, conducting interviews and analyzing forensic evidence.
Morin has worked as an investigator for the Attorney General’s Office since 2016.
