Mesa police seek charges against AG investigator in fatal shooting of mother of 7

PHOENIX — Mesa police want to charge an Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigator with negligent homicide in the fatal shooting of a mother of seven.

Mesa Police on Friday submitted charges to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether to prosecute.

Detectives identified Dulance Morin as the suspect in the Feb. 28 killing of Maria Lewis, 32, according to a department news release Friday.

Charges come after detectives executed multiple search warrants, conducted extensive interviews and performed forensic analysis.

Lewis was reportedly shot during an early morning walk near the intersection of Kinetic Drive and Reliance Way in Mesa. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Online records show she and Morin were neighbors, according to the Arizona Republic.

Morin is a Special Investigator with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, according to state data. He has reportedly been on leave since the shooting.

“The Mesa Police Department understands the community’s interest in this case and appreciates the public’s patience as detectives worked diligently to ensure the investigation was careful, accurate and complete,” Mesa Police detective J. Macias said in the statement.
