PHOENIX — The most significant obstacles for metro Phoenix motorists this weekend will be the result of Arizona State University’s homecoming activities, not roadwork.

The only items on the latest Arizona Department of Transportation Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory are overnight lane reductions in two locations.

In the West Valley, each direction of the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway will be narrowed to three lanes in areas between McDowell and Thunderbird roads from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday-Tuesday nights for lane marking.

And in Phoenix, southbound State Route 51 will be limited to one lane from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday-Tuesday nights for pavement maintenance

Closures for ASU homecoming start Friday night

The main traffic event this weekend will be in Tempe, where drivers should be aware of extensive restrictions related to ASU homecoming.

The festivities start with a parade down University Drive at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, which is also when a daylong block party on the Old Main Lawn begins.

The block party is a prelude to the sold-out football game between No. 21 ASU and No. 14 BYU, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at Mountain America Stadium.

Multiple roads in the ASU campus area will be closed between Friday night and Saturday evening, including stretches of University Drive, 10th Street and Myrtle Avenue.

The full list of Tempe’s homecoming-related street closures, along with bus detours, can be found online.
