Gilbert man attacked by swarm of bees

A Gilbert man was attacked by a swarm of bees on Thursday afternoon.

A Gilbert man was attacked by a swarm of bees on Thursday afternoon.

Brian Ruffentine with the Gilbert Fire Department said the 80-year-old man was mowing his lawn near San Tan Boulevard and Power Road when the attack happened.

“He was working in his yard and began to be attacked by the bees,” he said. “He took refuge inside of his vehicle. It’s estimated that he was stung over 100 times.”

The man is expected to recover.

Ruffentine said lawn equipment can attract bees and make them more likely to attack.

Anyone who sees a group of bees is advised to give them a wide berth and call an exterminator.
