Triple-A warning against do-it-yourself repairs

During the tough economic times we may be tempted to do our own repairs for things like home improvement or landscaping, but when it comes to your car, it may not be a good idea.

John Walter, Director of Auto Repair at Triple-A Arizona, said it may end up costing you more to do your own car repairs.

“You kind of take a stab and say, ‘Well, gosh, I think it’s this,’ and you buy the part and you install it and it doesn’t fix the problem, you’re only out what you spent for the part, but your time and you still have the same problem,” he said.

Walter said that, while do-it-yourself projects may seem like a good idea, they can become very complicated.

“There’s a very high percentage that a lot of the do-it-yourselfers today with more modern vehicles have a much higher risk of replacing the wrong part or doing the repair incorrectly,” he said.

Walter said the do-it-yourself repairs that should be avoided are brake jobs and replacing or repairing timing belts, air conditioners and fuel systems.
