Now it’s much easier to be reunited with a lost pet because the owner may be just a tweet away.

Maricopa County Care and Control has a new program where lost pets who come into the shelter are posted on their Twitter page.

“We have gotten a tremendous response from the public,” said the agency’s Rodrigo Silva. “We have found a couple of people that found their animals, thanks to our Twitter.

“Our marketing budget is very, very small and as people are learning about our tweets, they are also talking about it.”

Silva said the effort to find the dog’s owner goes beyond online posting.

“Our officers, when they pick up an animal from a neighborhood, they ask the person who called them if we can post a sign in their yard, advising the neighborhood that we have found a pet and the pet is now at Animal Care and Control.”

Silva said despite the new service, it is a good idea for pet owners to register their animal with the county to make it even easier for lost pets and owners to reunite.
