Major downtown Phoenix street closing this weekend for Formula 1 car demo

PHOENIX — East Jefferson Street in downtown Phoenix will be closed for more than 24 hours this weekend as the Red Bull Showrun brings Formula 1 cars to the city.

The closure runs from 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday between Central Avenue and Fifth Street. Organizers expect the free event to draw about 30,000 spectators.

Residents along Jefferson Street will have alternate access via Washington Street, according to Visit Phoenix press release. Surrounding streets should expect heavy pedestrian traffic throughout the day, and lane restrictions will occur before and after the event during setup and breakdown.

The demonstration runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, transforming Jefferson Street into a custom-built motor sports course featuring Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls F1 cars. Ford performance vehicles, including the Mustang GT3 and F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, also will be featured.

While not a race, the Red Bull Showrun shows off the F1 machinery through burnouts, precision drifting and “dynamic car runs,” said the press release.
