PHOENIX — A man from Mexico has been indicted after being accused of smuggling 163 pounds of meth across the border into Arizona, authorities said Wednesday.

Jose Luis Vazquez-Gonzalez, 39, is charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and importation of methamphetamine, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said in a press release.

Vazquez-Gonzalez on June 18 allegedly entered the United States through a port of entry in San Luis where officers discovered 155 packages hidden in his car.

The packages contained a white crystal-like substance that tested positive for the illegal drug, authorities said.

If convicted, Vazquez-Gonzalez faces a maximum penalty of life behind bars and a $10,000 fine.

Investigation of the case was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations.
