PHOENIX — There’s no word on who will replace outgoing Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit.

“It’s an important responsibility,” Gov. Doug Ducey said Thursday. “I want to make sure we put a serious person in there that can do the job, and represent the taxpayers well.”

DeWit was confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate for the chief financial officer position at NASA.

“Treasurer DeWit called me (Wednesday) afternoon … told me I was the first call that he made,” Ducey said. “I don’t know if anyone’s been unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate for any position.

“We’re going to … talk about transition, and work hard to make it as seamless as possible.”

The replacement will be a Republican. By state law, an appointed replacement for a state official must be from the same party as the outgoing official.

DeWit was elected to the state office in 2014. By 2016, he was working on Trump’s campaign and said that he would not run for re-election in 2018.

Last year, Congress passed the NASA Authorization Act, which gave the department $19.5 billion in funding.
