14-year-old boy critically injured after being hit in Phoenix crosswalk

A 14-year-old boy was left with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while walking in a crosswalk in Phoenix on Saturday night, authorities said.

Officers and Phoenix Fire Department personnel responded to the crash near 35th and Dunlap avenues around 7:30 p.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Witnesses told police an adult male was driving southbound on 35th Avenue in the curb lane when his vehicle hit the teenager in the crosswalk.

Emergency responders transported the 14-year-old to a local hospital with critical injuries.

The driver stayed at the scene and was not injured, police said.

A Drug Recognition Expert from the Phoenix Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit evaluated the driver and found no signs of impairment. The driver was cited for traffic violations and released at the scene.

Detectives with the Vehicular Crimes Unit are leading the ongoing investigation into the collision.
