Man dies after running into Phoenix street while being chased, hit by impaired driver

A 53-year-old man who was hospitalized in extremely critical condition after being hit by a vehicle while running into a Phoenix street has died, according to authorities.

Gregory Jones was pronounced dead early Monday morning, the Phoenix Police Department said.

Officers had responded to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian around 11 p.m. on Aug. 22 near 28th Drive and Peoria Avenue.

When police and fire crews arrived at the scene, they located the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital.

Investigating detectives learned the pedestrian had been involved in an argument with an adult woman prior to the collision. Witnesses were reportedly chasing the man when he ran into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle.

The driver, an adult male, initially fled the scene but returned a few minutes later, police said.

Officers who spoke with the driver observed signs of impairment upon his return.

The incident remains under investigation. Authorities said any potential charges will be determined following a full collision reconstruction and case review.
