Teens arrested for allegedly stealing car, shooting at Glendale police

PHOENIX — Nobody was injured and two teens were in custody after a shooting involving the Glendale Police Department took place in Phoenix early Friday evening, authorities said.
Police said they responded to a report of an armed robbery around 5 p.m. near 91st Avenue and Camelback Road.
The man who called 911 said he had been robbed at gunpoint in his garage by a man and woman who took personal belongings and his 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, police said.
Police said they found the vehicle traveling near 83rd and Glendale avenues and followed it.
The male suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds from a handgun out of the window toward the officers, and the Suburban hit multiple cars driving on the road.
The vehicle crashed near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road and the suspects fled on foot, police said.
A Glendale officer fired one round at the suspects that didn’t hit anyone, and police said they were able to take both suspects into custody following a foot pursuit.
The suspects were identified Monday as Kristian Leonel Medeiros, 18, and Yazmin Garcia-Hernandez, 18.
Police said they both admitted to “stealing the money and vehicle for food” and firing the gun in an effort to deter officers from chasing them.
Police said four vehicles had been damaged by the suspects, three struck by the Suburban and two struck by gunfire.
Medeiros and Garcia-Hernandez were booked on multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, armed robbery, theft of means of transportation and discharge of a firearm within city.

Grand Avenue was closed in both directions between 43rd and 67th avenues after the incident, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
It was the sixth shooting involving law enforcement in the Phoenix area this year, the first involving Glendale police.
