PHOENIX – Arizona’s new U.S. senators – Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema – have been assigned to work together on two committees.
The 2018 election opponents both were appointed to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and the Special Committee on Aging.
The Republican assignments were announced last week, with McSally also appointed to Armed Services; Energy and Natural Resources; and Indian Affairs.
“These assignments will allow me to continue advancing military readiness, fighting burdensome regulations, maintaining sustainable water in Arizona, and ensuring Arizona’s tribes and seniors are well represented federally,” McSally, a former Air Force pilot, said in a press release Monday.
“I look forward to working with my new colleagues on either side of the aisle to deliver results to Arizonans.”
Democratic committee assignments were announced in December.
In addition to the two committees she shares with her fellow former congresswoman, Sinema will serve on Commerce, Science and Transportation; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans’ Affairs.
Sinema defeated McSally in the November election for the seat vacated by Republican Jeff Flake, who didn’t run for re-election.
McSally joined Sinema in making the move from the House to the Senate when Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey selected her to replace Jon Kyl, who stepped down at the end of the 2018.
Kyl had previously been appointed by Ducey to succeed John McCain after McCain’s death in August.
