‘Weird Al’ Yankovic to make two Arizona stops during 2018 tour

PHOENIX — It is going to get a little more weird in Arizona next year — literally.

“Weird Al” Yankovic, a singer who often uses parodies and satires in his performances, will have two Arizona stops on his “The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour” next year.

Yankovic, whose real name is Alfred Matthew, will visit the Fox Theater in Tucson on May 5 and Ikeda Theater at Mesa Arts Center in Mesa on May 8. Tickets for all of Yankovic’s shows will go on sale on Oct. 20 at noon Arizona time.

However, Yankovic will not be coming to Arizona alone: The singer will have comedian Emo Philips open the show for him.

While the name for Yankovic’s tour may loom large, the actual tour will not. In a post on Facebook, Yankovic warned that this tour “is not for everybody. By design, it has extremely limited appeal.”

According to the website, the tour will consist of limited-production performances, meaning that the audience will miss out on the artist’s famed costumes, props and video screens.

But long-time fans of Yankovic will be happy to know that the set list on tour will be comprised “almost entirely” of his original — non-parody — songs.

“I know that there’s a small but enthusiastic subset of fans that literally have been waiting decades for this kind of a show, so… this tour is for them. And me. And the band,” Yankovic said in the post. “After putting on “multimedia extravaganzas” for 35 years, we just wanted to take it down a few notches and have a little musical palate cleanser.”

“EVERY SINGLE SHOW WILL BE DIFFERENT. We’re going deep into the catalogue and mixing up the set list every night. This show will be loose, unpredictable, and maybe a little sloppy – we’ll be making it up as we go along,” he added.

The tour kicks off in Poughkeepsie, New York, on Feb. 27 and will wrap up on June 10, at the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

For fans of the “weird” singer who will not be able to make it to either of his Arizona stops, no worries: Yankovic will also be performing at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on May 6, at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on May 11 and at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay in San Diego on May 12.
