Rep. Yassamin Ansari conducts surprise inspection at Phoenix ICE facility
Rep. Yassamin Ansari conducted her 13th unannounced oversight visit at an ICE facility today, this time at the Phoenix Field Office in downtown Phoenix. She said the visit was prompted by Arizona Mirror reporting that 11 calls were made to 911 between December 2025 and March 2026 for detainees experiencing seizures, fainting and other medical emergencies. The facility has no medical staff on site.
"We know that rules have been broken and norms have been broken left and right. … We know that people are being treated incredibly inhumanely, that there is a severe lack of access to quality medical care, that there is medical neglect."
Nationally, more than 52 people have died in ICE custody since January 2025, Ansari said, including Emmanuel Damas, who died in Arizona from what began as a toothache.
