Know your ballot: Arguments for and against Prop 318
Prop 318 would prevent Arizona private and public school sports teams from allowing transgender athletes to play on a team that does not match their biological sex. The ballot measure would also ban students from using bathrooms, showers, locker rooms or any other private spaces considered “integral to athletic engagement” that are not designated for their biological sex.
Arizona state Rep. Selina Bliss argued for the legislation, saying it protects female athletes. Darrell Hill from ACLU Arizona opposes it, saying it violates the First Amendment by impeding private schools’ rights to allow transgender participation in sports. If the Prop passes it would go into effect on Jan. 1.
