Gov. Katie Hobbs announced efforts to advance the state’s technology during a speech at the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation Awards on Wednesday.

During her speech, Hobbs announced the creation of an AI steering committee which will help the deployment of artificial intelligence in Arizona. Using GenAI, the group will identify opportunities of when the technology can be used to drive productivity and security in the state.

“In Arizona, we have been pioneers in innovation, aerospace and advanced manufacturing, from the first integrated circuits to cutting-edge computing chips to autonomous cars,” Hobbs said. “Today, we take bold steps to explore opportunities for artificial intelligence and advanced air mobility and further solidify Arizona’s leadership in technology.”

Along with the new committee, the Institute of Automated Mobility, housed at the Arizona Commerce Authority, is being expanded into the Institute for Advanced Mobility to consider viability in air transportation including vertical takeoff and landing aircrafts, air taxis and other aeronautical technology.

“Through forward-thinking policies and a vibrant innovation ecosystem, Arizona has become the premier destination to develop, test and scale groundbreaking technologies,” President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority Sandra Watson said. “Under Governor Hobbs’ leadership, we remain laser-focused on leveraging Arizona’s unique assets and strengths to ensure our state remains at the cutting edge of technological advancement.”

In recent years, Arizona has implemented automated vehicles, operated by Waymo, to be used to advance transportation throughout the state.
