Phoenix breaks another daily heat record with more likely to fall this weekend

PHOENIX — Friday was yet another day with a daily heat record in Phoenix and more are expected to fall this weekend.

The mercury reached 106 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for its official reading, at 1:59 p.m. The previous record of 105 degree was set in 2020.

It was the 11th consecutive day Phoenix tied or broke a daily heat record, extending a run that is the longest in city history.

That streak will likely continue this weekend with highs forecast for 107 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. The daily record for both of those days is 105 degrees.

Another heat record: When will Phoenix cool down?

The heat is set to persist for a while in Phoenix.

An excessive heat warning that has been in effect since last Wednesday has been extended multiple times and is now set to run until Monday night.

High temperatures are forecast in the triple digits through at least the next week and Phoenix is on track for new record highs each day through at least Wednesday.

During the record stretch, Phoenix has reached 110 degrees on six days, including a high of 117 degrees on Saturday. Tuesday was the first time Phoenix hit 110 degrees in October in its history.

Until last week, the latest date for a high of at least 110 degrees was Sept. 19.

Per city of Phoenix policy, the Echo Canyon and Cholla trails at Camelback Mountain and all Piestewa Peak trails are closed from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. on days when an excessive heat warning is in effect. Twice this week, firefighters have had to rescue overheated hikers from trails during those hours.
