PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Health Services on Thursday announced Mike Sheldon as the new chief executive officer for the Arizona State Hospital.

As the new CEO, Sheldon will serve as deputy director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, according to a press release.

Sheldon has experience as interim CEO at the 360-bed facility in Phoenix since May after serving as chief operating officer since 2017.

He’s also overseen operations at two crisis observation and inpatient psychiatric facilities in the state.

“Few people have demonstrated a greater commitment to Arizona’s behavioral health system than Mike Sheldon,” Don Herrington, interim director of ADHS, said in the release.

“That’s why I’m excited to have named Mike as the Arizona State Hospital’s new permanent CEO.”

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey named Herrington as interim director in August 2021, who was AHS deputy director for planning and operations.

Herrington replaced Dr. Cara Christ, who’d been director since May 2015 and left to become chief medical officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona.
