PHOENIX — The Buckeye Police Department’s police dog has some extra protection thanks to a donation from a Massachusetts-based nonprofit.
Drax, the department’s K9, was gifted a bullet and stab protection vest courtesy of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
The almost five-pound vest costs up to $2,300 and comes with a five-year warranty, according to a Buckeye Police release.
The nonprofit has provided more than 4,000 vests to police dogs across the country because of private and corporate donations.
Eligible police K9s must be at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement agencies.
Dogs who have vests that are expired are also eligible for the program.
There are about 30,000 police dogs across the country, according to the release.
