PHOENIX – The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies recovered the body of a man who went underwater while swimming in the Salt River on Sunday.
Sgt. Calbert Gillett said the man was swimming with friends near Water Users Recreation Site in Tonto Basin around 2 p.m.
He went under and never resurfaced, Gillett said Monday.
Teams of deputies – ground, air and boat – searched for the man before a dive took over.
The body was recovered Sunday night.
The recreation site is off the Bush Highway near Saguaro Lake and is popular with kayakers, tubers and swimmers.
