PHOENIX – A second state-run mass vaccination site opened Monday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, but supply is limiting its hours of operation and likely will for some time, Arizona’s top health official said.
“It sounds like it’s still going to be a bit before we get that additional vaccine,” Health Director Dr. Cara Christ told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News.
Only 500 COVID-19 vaccine shots will be administered per day at the Phoenix site, which will operate from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, then expand to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Tuesday. The site has the capacity to distribute 12,000 shots per day.
The other department site, State Farm Stadium in Glendale, runs 24/7. That site began providing second doses Monday, in addition to first doses and has given over 100,000 shots since opening Jan. 8.
Gov. Doug Ducey said Sunday in an interview with CNN the state has asked President Joe Biden’s administration for 300,000 more doses.
“We’re in danger of running out of the vaccines we have,” Ducey said.
“All we can do is distribute what we receive from the federal government and the private sector, so we are working with the Biden administration to get more vaccines.”
As of Sunday, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported 659,728 vaccines had been given across the 15 counties and more than 1 million ordered.
Christ said the state’s supply has taken second doses into account.
“There is, right now, a second dose for everybody’s who gotten a first one,” she said.
“Those doses come in as first and second doses each week. We’ve been allocating to the counties the number of second doses they’ve received based on either three or four weeks ago, depending on what type of vaccine it is.”
