PHOENIX – A Glendale couple is richer by $410 million after claiming the winning Mega Millions prize that was drawn earlier this month.
The unidentified couple bought the ticket May 27 at a convenience store at 67th Avenue and Beardsley Road. They hit the largest jackpot in the state June 9 and 11th highest in the game’s history.
They opted for the lump sum, a cash payout of nearly $320 million. They will be taxed about $77 million by the federal government and about $15 million by Arizona.
The pair will take home around $228 million.
The couple wishes to remain anonymous, but the wife, 63, told Arizona Lottery they have been playing the lottery regularly for 38 years.
“I feel lighter now and it’s incredible to know that there will never be another bill that I can’t pay,” the 70-year-old husband said in a press release.
The wife, 63, said just before they bought the ticket she “found a shiny new heads-up penny just before I bought our tickets, so I just knew I’d be lucky.”
The winning numbers – 1, 5, 9, 10, 23 and the gold ball No. 22 – were chosen because they’re family birth dates.
The couple planned to pay off their mortgage, help their children and grandchildren and enjoy a lot of it.
