More storms possible in Phoenix area after damaging night

More storms could move into the Phoenix area Monday after a busy night of damaging wind, hail, blowing dust and flash flooding.

The National Weather Service said storms Sunday night brought wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph near Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend and across parts of metro Phoenix.

Sunday’s storms prompted several warnings across the Valley, including severe thunderstorm warnings for Phoenix, Glendale and Peoria, dust storm warnings for parts of Maricopa and Pinal counties and a flash flood warning for portions of Maricopa and Pinal counties.

APS said the storm damage knocked down 42 power poles across 13 sites, leaving just under 23,000 customers without power at the peak of the outages. About 8,000 customers remained without power Monday morning.

“Our crews are going to be working throughout the day,” APS spokesperson Anne Porter told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “They’re doing everything they can, either through repairs or through using other technologies to reroute the power.”

Forecasters said there is a chance storms will redevelop Monday. If that happens, the main threats will be strong wind, blowing dust, heavy rain and lightning. The chance of storms in the Phoenix area is about 15% to 25%.

Highs Monday in the Phoenix area are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees.

Storm chances are expected to continue through midweek, with the best chance for heavy rain and flash flooding Wednesday into early Thursday.
