Two women died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a Mesa street in dark, rainy conditions Sunday morning, police said.

The collision happened shortly before 1 a.m. on Center and Inglewood streets, north of McKellips Road, where stormy weather limited visibility, according to the Mesa Police Department.

The two women were struck while crossing Center Street. After the crash, the driver stopped and tried to warn approaching motorists.

Multiple vehicles could be involved in fatal Mesa crash

Two other vehicles then entered the area, and police said one may have struck one of the women.

One woman died at the scene. The other was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Some drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police are searching for a possible third vehicle, described as a dark-colored sedan, and are asking for the public’s help identifying its driver.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or was in the area at the time is urged to call the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211.

Police said there is no evidence that impairment or speed played a role in the crash.

Storms and flooding over the weekend also prompted highway closures and evacuations across Arizona.

ANY Fatality is unfortunate, especially, if it were avoidable. Gone are the days when gradeschool kids are taught to look both ways and keep an eye for incoming traffic as they cross the street. It's dark, 1:AM with Rain,... Pedestrians are NOT at an advantage here.
