Keep that rainwear handy: Forecast calls for more storms in metro Phoenix

PHOENIX – The metro Phoenix weather disturbance that brought widespread showers to the area Tuesday and Wednesday was just the opening act for a more potent system.

“The big story for everyone is going to be showers and possibly a few embedded thunderstorms which will roll through the metro Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening,” Mark O’Malley of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday morning.

The rain will be accompanied by strong winds that could create difficult driving conditions, prompting the NWS to issue a wind advisory for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

“It’s going to be extremely windy with these showers,” O’Malley said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there are wind gusts 30-40 miles per hour, possibly even higher, sweeping through the metro.”

What else is in Phoenix weather forecast?

After temperatures climbed into the 80s on Tuesday, the storms are cooling things off. The forecast calls for highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s on Wednesday, the middle 60s on Thursday and middle-to-upper 50s on Friday, with overnight lows in the 40s throughout the week.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city’s official readings, received 0.19 inches of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

“Areas to the north and east of Phoenix in the foothills and the mountains obviously saw more,” O’Malley said.

Through Wednesday morning, Phoenix’s 2025 rainfall total was 0.61 inches, with all but a small fraction coming in the last week. Despite the recent wet spell, the total is still well behind the normal amount of about 2 inches for this time of year.

Thursday’s system is expected to add between 0.1 and 0.3 inches to the total. There’s also a 50% chance for more showers on Friday before the skies clear and temperatures rise over the weekend.
