Driver arrested for manslaughter after deadly crash on US 60 in Mesa

The driver who allegedly caused a deadly crash on US 60 in Mesa early Wednesday was arrested on multiple felony charges, authorities said.

Zachary Robert Penrod, 21, was arrested after getting treatment for minor injuries sustained in the collision.

The Queen Creek resident was booked into jail on counts of manslaughter, aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument and endangerment.

Penrod showed signs of impairment after the three-vehicle collision on eastbound US 60 near Higley Road, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

What led up to the deadly crash on US 60 in Mesa?

One of the vehicles had pulled over earlier for a flat tire, and family members arrived to help change it.

They were all preparing to leave after the tire was changed when Penrod crashed into the two vehicles on the shoulder, DPS said.

DPS troopers responded to the crash site about 1 a.m.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The freeway was closed for several hours while investigators collected evidence and the wreckage was cleared.
