A stretch of Mill Avenue will close in both directions this week, here’s why

PHOENIX — Drivers will want to avoid downtown Tempe for the next few days as both directions of Mill Avenue will be closed.

The City of Tempe announced that the northbound lanes of the street will close from University Drive to Seventh Street on Monday morning. That stretch could be closed for up to six days.

This is in addition to a closure of the southbound lanes, which are shut down from the south side of Fifth Street to the north side of University Drive.

Why will Mill Avenue be closed?

This latest closure is being done so crews can install foundations for a new Mill Avenue gateway sign, which the City says is a landmark piece of the Downtown Tempe Refresh project.

The City added that no traffic will be allowed to travel onto Mill Avenue from University Drive starting Monday morning. The northbound lanes of Mill Avenue are planned to reopen on July 27, but could open earlier.

Buses will be detoured around the closure and the Tempe Streetcar will be running on a truncated route, with northbound service stopping at Mill Avenue and Ninth Street.

Businesses on the northeast corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive can be accessed through an alley on University Drive during the closure.
