PHOENIX – The downtown Tempe branch of a national pizza chain served its last pie over the weekend.

The Mellow Mushroom location on Mill Avenue near Seventh Street closed for good on Sunday.

“Thank you for all the love, laughs, loyalty and memories over the years,” the restaurant said in a social media post. “It has been an honor to be a part of your celebrations, late nights and everyday moments. We will miss you more than words (or pizza) can say.”

Other Valley Mellow Mushroom restaurants remain open

Mellow Mushroom still has three Valley locations: in Mesa, at north Phoenix’s High Street development and in north Phoenix’s Norterra community.

The chain was founded in Atlanta in 1974 and maintained a trippy ’70s vibe while expanding to over 160 locations in 17 states.

The menu features handcrafted stone-baked pies with names like Holy Shiitake, Merry Prankster and Maui Wowie as well as a build-your-own pizza option.
