Construction to begin on State Route 187 improvement project to reduce congestion

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is preparing to add turn lanes and widen shoulders on State Route 187 on the Gila River Indian Community.

The project is expected to begin on Tuesday and will repave the 6-mile length of SR 187 between SR 87 and SR 387, east of Interstate 10.

Construction on the project is expected to take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

ADOT said that at times the roadway will be narrowed to a single lane of alternating traffic, and recommended motorists use SR 387 as an alternate route.

What other enhancements will be made on State Route 187?

According to ADOT, the other improvements made during the project to SR 187 will include:

• Adding a right-turn lane to SR 187 approaching SR 87
• Adding a right-turn lane to SR 87 approaching SR 187
• Adding a left-turn lane on SR 187 approaching Casa Grande Road
• Widening SR 187 to have 8-foot shoulders on both sides
• Improving drainage on the highway
• Replacing bridge railings
• Relocating the traffic signal equipment at the intersection of SR 187 and SR 87.

The SR 187 project is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
