Only 1 metro Phoenix freeway will have a full closure this weekend

PHOENIX – Only one metro Phoenix freeway will be fully closed this weekend, but drivers will have to contend with lane restrictions in several areas.

The full closure will be on State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for March 7-10. (All times below are subject to change.)

Southbound SR 143 will be closed from the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to Interstate 10 from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Crews will work on a traffic shift as part of the Broadway Curve Improvement Project during the closure, which includes the following ramps starting at 8 p.m. Friday:

• Southbound SR 143 on-ramps at Washington Street, Sky Harbor Boulevard and University Drive.
• Westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway off-ramp at Sky Harbor Boulevard.

ADOT is suggesting the following detours:

• Westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway traffic can take eastbound I-10 to reach destinations south of the closure.
• Eastbound Loop 202 traffic can take the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway to reach destinations south of the closure.
• To reach the airport, take southbound 44th Street from the Loop 202.

Other Phoenix freeway system concerns this weekend

Meanwhile, motorists on the following stretches of the metro Phoenix freeway system could experience delays due to lane restrictions.

• In north Phoenix, southbound I-17 will be reduced to two lanes from Loop 303 to Happy Valley Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Sunday.
• In the same area, northbound I-17 will be down to two lanes from Dove Valley Road to State Route 74/Carefree Highway from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
• Along the Broadway Curve, I-10 will be limited to three lanes in each directions in areas between the I-17 “Split” interchange in Phoenix and US 60 in Tempe from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.
