Watch out for these Phoenix-area freeway closures as crews stay busy this weekend

Multiple freeway closures and lane restrictions will slow traffic across the Valley this weekend as crews work on widening, paving and bridge projects on Loop 101, Loop 202, Loop 303, State Route 51 and State Route 347, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

Most closures start Friday night and last through 5 a.m. Monday, according to ADOT’s weekend travel advisory. Drivers on the Loop 101 Pima Freeway should watch for shorter closures that switch directions over the weekend.

Multiple freeway closures are scheduled this weekend in the Phoenix metro area, including:

Eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway closing for widening work

Drivers in the northwest Valley will need a workaround this weekend, with the eastbound Loop 101 closed between 75th and 51st avenues from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

The eastbound on-ramps at Union Hills Drive and Bell Road will also close while crews continue widening the freeway.

To get around the closure, take Union Hills Drive east to 51st Avenue and reconnect with Loop 101.

Southbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway closing near I-10

In the west Valley, the southbound Loop 101 will shut down between Indian School Road and Interstate 10 from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday for interchange improvements.

The closure includes the ramps connecting southbound Loop 101 to both directions of I-10. Southbound on-ramps at Glendale Avenue, Cardinals Way and Camelback Road will also be closed.

Drivers can head south on 83rd, 91st or 99th avenues to reach I-10 outside the work zone.

Southbound SR 51 closing between Indian School Road and I-10

Drivers heading toward downtown Phoenix or the airport on State Route 51 will hit a closure between Indian School Road and I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday while crews work on the pavement.

The ramps connecting southbound SR 51 to both directions of I-10 and eastbound Loop 202 will also close.

Drivers can use 16th Street to reach I-10 or 24th Street to connect with Loop 202.

Westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway closing for widening construction

The westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler will close between Arizona Avenue and Price Road from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday as crews continue widening the freeway.

The ramps connecting westbound Loop 202 to northbound Loop 101 will also shut down, along with the westbound Loop 202 on-ramps at Gilbert, Cooper and McQueen roads.

Loop 101 Pima Freeway closures switching directions over the weekend

Drivers on the Loop 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale will face pavement work in both directions this weekend, but the closures won’t happen at the same time.

First, the southbound freeway will close between Shea Boulevard and Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway from 9 p.m. Friday until 2 p.m. Saturday.

Drivers can head west on Shea Boulevard to Scottsdale or Hayden roads and continue south around the closure.

Then, the northbound freeway will close between Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway and Shea Boulevard from 9 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday.

For that closure, use Scottsdale Road or McClintock Drive, which connects with Hayden Road, to head north past the work zone.

Eastbound Loop 303 closing between 43rd Avenue and I-17

Bridge construction will shut down the eastbound Loop 303 between 43rd Avenue and Interstate 17 from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

To get around the closure, head north on 43rd Avenue, then east on Dove Valley Road to connect with I-17.

SR 347 narrowing to one lane north of Maricopa

Drivers traveling between Maricopa and the Valley should allow extra time this weekend, with State Route 347 narrowed to one lane in each direction between Casa Blanca and Riggs roads.

The restrictions start at 10 p.m. Friday and last until 5 a.m. Monday while crews pave the roadway.

Be ready to slow down and merge as you approach the work zone.
