New westbound Loop 101 lane opens as widening project progresses

PHOENIX — A fourth westbound lane is now accessible on Loop 101 as part of a $140 million Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project that still has more to do.

The new lane opened this week between Interstate 17 and 51st Avenue as roadwork continues on the Agua Fria Freeway project.

While the new lane is open, drivers should still expect closures and lane restrictions on other parts of the project between I-17 and 75th Avenue.

However, the fourth westbound lane gives drivers an idea of how the project will improve traffic flow when construction is complete.

The project began in September 2024 and is expected to be completed by spring 2027.

Other improvements include new-lane segments, an additional freeway entrance turn lane along southbound 75th Avenue, widening bridges, upgrading lighting and multiple other lane additions.
