Northbound SR 51 reopens following pavement improvement project

The closure of northbound State Route 51 was extended through Monday morning, but construction finished Sunday evening and the freeway reopened, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced.

The northbound side of the freeway — which shut between Indian School Road and Colter Street — was supposed to reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday following the extension.

The project was originally scheduled to finish at noon Sunday.

After the closure ended, northbound SR 51 shifted to be narrowed to the two right lanes from Highland Avenue to Camelback Road, which will last until September.

As part of the closure, the on-ramps at McDowell and Thomas roads were closed. The off-ramp at Highland Avenue was also closed.

The extension was due to crews continuing striping work and implementing a traffic switch as part of a pavement improvement project, which has been causing around-the-clock restrictions since July 27.
