Interstate 17 closure caused by gunshots, car collision that left 2 injured

PHOENIX — The northbound lanes of Interstate 17 near Pinnacle Peak Road were closed down Saturday night for reports of gunshots and a vehicle collision that left two people injured, according to authorities.

Phoenix police arrived in the area of I-17 and Peoria Avenue around 6:40 p.m. after receiving information on gunshots being fired. The call said that at least one person in a car had fired at another car carrying two adults.

Police said multiple shots were fired, and it is believed that one of the rounds hit the victim’s tires and caused the car to flip over and crash.

The Phoenix Fire Department then arrived at the scene to treat the two people for minor injuries.

The suspect, however, had fled the area before police arrived.

This law enforcement activity soon caused traffic to slow in the area before the northbound I-17 was closed around 8:40 p.m.

The closure lasted about 30 minutes, and the southbound lanes were unaffected.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is handling the collision investigation, and detectives have taken over the case.
