Brush fire near Wickenburg expected to cause delays on US 60

PHOENIX — Motorists driving on the US 60 south of Wickenburg should expect to experience periodic closures due to a brush fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

The Department of Public Safety told ABC 15 that a two-vehicle non-injury crash caused three separate wildfires in the area.

One of the fires, which was around five miles southeast of Wickenburg, had grown to 100 acres by 12:40 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM).

There is a “SET” evacuation order in place for the area of Rio Vista Hills to Saguaro Blossom Lane east and west of US 60, including Wickenburg and Allah. According to the state’s emergency alert system, this means that residents within that area should be alert and consider voluntarily relocating themselves.

The intermittent closures of the US 60 in both directions are necessary for firefighting efforts.

“These repetitive shutdowns are for the safety of the public and fire personnel while the incident conducts retardant drops,” DFFM said.

ADOT reminded drivers to dispose of cigarettes safely, avoid parking in tall grass or brush, secure tow chains to avoid sparking and check their tire pressure as exposed rims can cause sparks.
