PHOENIX — Motorists traveling on Interstate 17 in north Phoenix this weekend can expect to experience some delays due to the Arizona Department of Transportation beginning work on a freeway project.
According to ADOT, the work is part of its Loop 303 project to add travel lanes and other improvements along the freeway between I-17 and 51st Avenue.
The project will also construct direct freeway-to-freeway ramps that connect I-17 and Loop 303.
This weekend, crews will be setting up barrier walls and preparing to begin construction on the bridge and ramp structure foundations at the I-17 and Loop 303 interchange.
The restrictions scheduled for this weekend include:
- I-17 narrowed to two or three lanes in either direction between Dixileta Drive and Dove Valley Road from 2 a.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.
- The southbound I-17 on-ramp at Dove Valley Road and southbound off-ramp at Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive closed from 2 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
- The northbound I-17 off-ramp at Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive closed from 1 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.
ADOT said detour routes will be in place while the on- and off-ramps are closed, including some that use the Dove Valley Road interchange and 43rd Avenue.
More details on ADOT’s Loop 303 project
The $129 million project is the first to be funded through the Maricopa County Association of Governments’ Proposition 479, a half-cent regional sales tax for transportation improvements that was approved by voters in 2024.
ADOT and MAG are also partnering on the funding and scheduling for the Loop 303 project.
The purpose of the work is to address the growing traffic demands on the freeway.
It is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete the construction and improvements that are part of the project.
