Chandler opens 1st public housing units converted through HUD program

Chandler on Tuesday opened a 157-unit development that was converted to public housing through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program, the first project of its kind in Chandler.

The development, known as Villas on McQueen, replaces two older communities built in 1972, allowing 78 households from the two communities to relocate to newer residences. Those 78 units range from one- to five-bedroom floor plans.

The other 79 units on-site will be available to families “at or below 60% of the Area Median Income through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program,” according to a press release.

The full 157-unit development cost $58 million. It was financed by seven groups: the Arizona Department of Housing, Maricopa County, City of Chandler, RBC Community Investments, Stonehenge Capital, Capital One and Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust.

Mayor Kevin Hartke attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the development alongside many other city and project officials.

“Villas on McQueen is a milestone that has been years in the making and I’m honored to celebrate what is possible when a community comes together with a shared purpose,” Hartke said. “These modern, affordable homes replace aging public housing with safe, dignified places to live.

“This project reaffirms our commitment that Chandler should be a place where people of every income level can thrive.”

Villas on McQueen’s amenities include a meditation room, book nook, fitness center, basketball court, clubhouse and more indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. A city-provided resident services program will be located on-site as well.

The development is located near Chandler Boulevard and McQueen Road.
