Republican David Schweikert projected to win 7th term in House of Representatives

PHOENIX — Incumbent Republican Rep. David Schweikert is projected to defeat Democratic challenger Jevin Hodge after votes from Maricopa County were updated Monday evening, according to the Associated Press.

Schweikert will represent Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.

The incumbent led by 894 votes before about 71,000 ballots dropped in Maricopa County on Monday night and grew his lead to 3,008 votes, according to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office.

Schweikert is projected to serve a seventh term in congress — his first for District 1 after redistricting– after taking office in 2011. He previously represented District 6.

He reportedly earned another term despite numerous campaign finance allegations that led to fines for him and his election committee.

His campaign committee was hit with a $125,000 fine by the Federal Elections Commission this year for misreporting spending and diverting some campaign funds for personal use.

Hodge, who serves as board president for a Head Start program in Phoenix, turned heads in 2020 when he came within 403 votes of winning a county Board of Supervisors seat.

Hodge led the race until votes dropped Sunday evening.
