AG Kris Mayes says state is ‘close’ to filing suit over Trump mail-in voting executive order

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said Wednesday her office is “gearing up” to legally challenge President Trump’s executive order seeking federal control of mail-in voting.

“We’re close guys. We’re close,” Mayes told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce & Gaydos Wednesday.

Mayes said she has been in contact with Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and fellow Democratic attorneys general.

“We are going to fight this in court and we are gonna win,” the attorney general said.

Trump signed the order Tuesday, directing federal agencies to compile a list of verified eligible voters in each state and instructing the U.S. Postal Service to refuse to deliver mail ballots to anyone not on it. The order also directs the U.S. attorney general to criminally prosecute election officials who send ballots to voters the administration deems ineligible.

“This is the ultimate states’ rights issue,” Mayes said. “I think our founding fathers would be appalled by this executive order.”

The challenge would be Mayes’ 40th lawsuit against the Trump administration, a tally she keeps on her official website. She put her win rate at roughly 80%, even closer to 100% on election cases.

Fontes on Tuesday called the order “a giant pile of bull(expletive)” and said Trump is “trying to pick his own voters.”
