Armed man arrested after standoff lasting several hours in Yavapai County

PHOENIX — A Yavapai County man who was armed with multiple weapons was arrested after a standoff that lasted several hours on Sunday, authorities announced.

The suspect, only identified as a man in his 30s, was arrested for disorderly conduct and attempted aggravated assault on law enforcement, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).

Deputies responded to a home near Sapphire Drive and State Route 69, just west of Prescott Valley, on Sunday afternoon due to a report about a man who was standing on his back porch while yelling and holding a rifle.

When deputies arrived at the home, they noticed the man was wearing a holster with a revolver inside. When the man saw the deputies, he tried to pull the gun out, but was unable to, according to YCSO.

After seeing the man reach for the weapon, YCSO said deputies drew their weapons, but no shots were fired.

The sheriff’s office said the man then went into his home and refused to communicate with deputies, which led to a standoff and the SWAT team being called.

During the standoff, deputies noticed the man was armed with a revolver and a shotgun and that he had multiple boxes of ammunition near his front door, according to YCSO.

The suspect was taken into custody several hours later after deputies used less-lethal rounds, YCSO said.

The investigation into this case remains open.
