PHOENIX — The Democratic primary race in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District is headed for a recount after Yassamin Ansari’s lead over Raquel Terán dwindled to just 42 votes.

Ansari’s votes give her a 0.1% lead over Terán, which is within the 0.5% threshold required for an automatic recount under state law.

“This close race is a testament that every vote really counts and I could not be more proud of the dedicated staff and volunteers who organized for every single vote over the past year,” Ansari said in a statement on X. “While we are confident this lead will hold, it is important to let the vote-counting process fully play out through an automatic recount, and we welcome the process ahead.”

Ansari led by over 1,000 votes (about 4%) when results were released after Election Day but saw her lead shrink each day as tabulation continued.

“Especially in Arizona, we know that democracy is worth waiting for, and it is critical that every vote is counted.” Terán said in a statement on X.

The vote tally comes after Maricopa County released its final results on Monday.

Jeff Zink won the Republican primary but will face an uphill battle to win the U.S. House seat in a Democratic-friendly district that includes downtown, south and west Phoenix, as well as parts of Glendale.

The winner of the Nov. 5 general election will replace U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, the Democratic nominee for a Senate seat.

Who are Yassamin Ansari and Raquel Terán?

Ansari began her career as a policy advisor advocating for climate change reform at the United Nations. She was elected to the Phoenix City Council in 2021 and served as vice mayor before leaving office at the end of March to focus on the congressional race.

Terán is a former Arizona Democratic Party chair and state lawmaker. She most recently served in the Arizona Senate before leaving office last year to concentrate on running for Gallego’s seat.
