Witnesses jump into Glendale lake to save driver after multi-vehicle crash

PHOENIX — Witnesses stepped in to save a driver after a crash sent a vehicle into a Glendale lake on Thursday.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred south of the Loop 101 at the intersection of 59th Avenue and Behrend Drive, according to the Glendale Police Department.

A car was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Behrend Drive when it was struck by another vehicle heading southbound.

The collision caused one car to swerve into a decorative lake, while the second car simultaneously stopped and caught on fire, police said.

While the car was underwater in the lake, witnesses were able to rescue the driver by opening a car door and unlatching the seatbelt. The second driver was able to exit the car that was on fire.

Both patients were taken to a hospital but neither suffered serious injuries, according to police.

Authorities said speed and impairment were not factors in the crash.
