Tucson Police identify, charge mass shooting suspect who left 9 injured

Authorities on Monday released the identity of the suspect who was shot while fleeing a mass shooting in Tucson that left nine people injured Sunday.

The Tucson Police Department said 21-year-old David Leroy French will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex following his release from the hospital.

He was charged with discharging a firearm at a structure, nine counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and nine counts of aggravated assault with serious physical injury.

Authorities noted that French could face more charges pending the investigation’s completion.

French does have a prior felony conviction for firing a weapon during an altercation when he was 19 and was sentenced to “intensive probation,” according to Pima County Attorney Laura Conover.

Conover noted that he was still under court supervision without any documented infractions when the mass shooting took place.

Additionally, Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto provided an update on the victims Monday, stating they were recovering and that many had already been released from the hospital.

The mass shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday near the 100 block of East Congress Street, which is one block away from the James A. Walsh Federal Courthouse.

Patrol officers in the area responded to the incident on foot and found French fleeing the scene.

After police gave multiple commands, an officer shot French, authorities said.

Officers provided aid to French and took him into custody. The Tucson Fire Department transported him to the hospital in critical condition.

Police said nine other individuals had gunshot wounds, mostly to extremities, from the initial shooting. The responding officers rendered aid to those individuals before Tucson Fire arrived, and they were all transported to a hospital.

No officers were injured in the pursuit.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is handling the criminal investigation while the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The Tucson Police Department is also conducting its own probe.
